Your IP address is the number that identifies your device on the internet, similar to a return address on a letter. When you visit WhatIP, your browser connects to our server, and that connection reveals your current public IP address -- the one shown at the top of this page. It is not something you need to remember or type in; WhatIP detects it automatically.
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a numerical label assigned to every device connected to a network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It allows devices to find and exchange data with each other, the same way a phone number allows two phones to connect to a call.
A private IP address is used inside your home or office network -- your router assigns one to your laptop, phone and smart TV so they can talk to each other. A public IP address is the one your internet provider assigns to your router so it can be reached from the wider internet. WhatIP shows your public IP address, which is what external websites and services see when you connect to them.
IPv4 addresses look like four numbers separated by dots, such as 203.0.113.24, and the available supply of them is limited. IPv6 addresses use a much larger, hexadecimal format, such as 2001:db8::1, designed to accommodate the growing number of internet-connected devices. Many connections today use both side by side.
Generally, no. IP geolocation typically resolves to the city, region or service area associated with your internet provider's infrastructure, not your exact street address. Accuracy varies by provider and connection type, and mobile or VPN connections are often even less precise. Treat any IP-based location as an estimate.
A public IP address can commonly be associated with an approximate geographic area, an internet service provider or hosting company, and an autonomous system number (ASN) identifying the network that owns the address block. It does not, by itself, reveal your name, your exact address, or your browsing history.
IP geolocation providers build large databases that map ranges of IP addresses to the region where an internet provider has registered them, using a mix of registry records, network routing data, and other signals. Because IP addresses are assigned in blocks to providers rather than to individual homes, the result is an educated estimate rather than a precise reading.
The two common ways are reconnecting to get a new address from your ISP (which only works if your provider uses dynamic IPs) or routing your traffic through a VPN or proxy server, which makes websites see that server's address instead of your own. Neither option is illegal on its own, but it does not make a browser session completely anonymous by itself.
